Tips to Get the Best Download and Browsing Speed on Dialup Internet Connection – Part 2
Hello!
This post is meant for dialup users who are interested in getting the best browsing and download speed on their dialup Internet connection.
I covered four tips in the first part of the post on this subject and to summarise in brief, they are:
- Checks to ensure that the telephone line used by dialup modem is perfectly OK, without any noise.
- The modem speed is set to maximum speed above 56K, example: 57,600 bps
- Correct DNS settings are given in the TCP/IP properties of the dialup connection
- Confirmation from the ISP that things are fine at their end (No technical issues etc.) or taking the best connection settings from their side)
For more details on the above topics, kindly read the full post at: http://www.pctipstricks.com/tips-to-get-higher-download-and-browsing-speeds-on-dialup-internet-connection-%E2%80%93-part-1/
There are some more tips from my experience and knowledge that can surely guide you in getting the best possible browsing and download speeds on dialup:
Modem Compression and IP Compression Must Be Enabled
Enabling modem compression and IP compression may help you in getting slightly better browsing and dialup speeds. I wrote probably as these two settings will be effective if they are enabled at your ISP end also and not only at your computer only.
The screenshots shown next shows these settings enabled in Microsoft Vista Business. From the path shown in the title bar, you can easily do these two settings in Vista as well as other Microsoft Windows versions as there are minor differences in the procedure to do so.

Use Light Browser to Surf (One that consumes less resources and processes your browsing data faster)
Mozilla Firefox and Opera are programmed and designed to use less computer resources and definitely speed up your Internet browsing (not downloads) as compared to browsers that require more PC resources (memory, processor and hard disk space etc.).
I use Microsoft IE (for some of the sites that work properly with IE only) and Firefox browsers and am more satisfied with Firefox as it’s open source, light weight, constantly updated and has lot of features in form of plugins.
I am not going behind the technicalities of the terms like finding out the memory and processor utilization of the various browsers and then choosing the best browser as this will be out of topic right now. I will discuss them in my post on “Tips for choosing the right Internet browser for your surfing needs”.

Buy the Web Accelerator or Proxy Graphics Compression Service from a Service Provider
Nitro and Onspeed are the two popular Web Accelerator service providers that I have used personally and can recommend to you. Both claim to provide faster surfing due to graphics compression. I personally like Onspeed Web Accelerator slightly better than Nitroglobal as the former has better support and a professional fully working website with detailed information.
Nitro and Onspeed Web Accelerator are paid services and their servers run a script that after authenticating you (based on your username and password) routes your browser http requests from their Acceleration server. Now based on graphic compression set at your end – good, better, excellent, original etc., through the SW installed at your PC, the server at their end processes and delivers the same type of demanded quality of images, graphics at your computer browser. Hence if you are ready to compromise on the quality of pictures by seeing less resolution (you need to define the IP/proxy IP and port given by these service providers), you will get better browsing, typically 2-3 times faster as compared to browsing without their service (as observed by me by selecting teh lowest resolution setting). This happens as the dialup modem at your end will have to download less data due to less resolution of the pictures (displayed in your browser) selected by you in the Nitro/Onspeed software installed at your PC.
I observe a good change in browsing speeds when I had selected the low graphics resolution in the Web Accelerator SW when surfing a picture oriented site.
I saw little change in browsing of web based email sites and no change in download speeds for file downloads (using download manager or FTP) and viewing online videos. I was not able to login into encrypted secure sites (starting with https) when using the Web Accelerator. I had to exit the Web Acceleration software and then remove the proxy and port settings in my browser to login into https sites (banking and payment processor sites).
I had bought Onspeed service some three years back in 2005 and had paid USD 55 for one year (USD 4.5 per month). Nitro Global service was somewhat slightly cheaper and costed me little less, i.e., $3 per month (I had bought it for 3 months when I had frequent problems with my broadband connection).
If you decide to make your dialup (works for other types of Internet connections too) browsing faster, then you can buy Onspeed Web Accelerator service from the following banner link :
Note: If you click and buy from the above banner link, I will get some monetary reward, being an Affiliate of Onspeed. I have spent a lot of time in researching and writing the posts at this blog and I am sure that they have fairly helped you and other PC users. Thanks if you consider this fair enough and buy the Onspeed Web Accelerator service from the above link.
The main webpages of Onspeed and Nitroglobal Companies are shown next.

Try another ISP (someone who always guarantees you 4-7 KBps download speed on dialup)
Funny but true! This comes from my years of experience of once working with ISP plus using the dialup connections of different ISP’s (I use dialup very less now and only as a backup connection when my broadband connection is down).
I am recommending this tip to you if you have tried every tip in this two part series and still always struggling at speeds less than 4KBps.
Normally, if you browse at non peak times, i.e., early morning or late night using your Internet dialup connection, you should get slightly increased speeds (2 to 3 Kbps increase) as compared to the normal day time usage . If there is large difference in the download speeds during peak and off peak times, then it’s sure that your ISP has done over subscription of dialup customers (less Internet bandwidth and more subscribers using the bandwidth simultaneously at the same time).
You should go for another ISP dialup Internet connection in such case and preferably the one who is always guaranteeing 4-7 KBps download speed.
There are claims regarding manual tweaking of the registry settings like using the best MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit), Maximum Receive TCP Window size and Maximum connections per server etc. that may probably increase the browsing and download speed of your dialup Internet. I tested them by making the respective changes manually or by using the Tweak Master software but didn’t observe any improvements. Hence, I am not writing anything about them here.
I also used DAP Premium for testing if it can increase the download speed by 400% (claimed by them) and rarely got 1-2 KBps more download speed (not browsing speed) compared to when I did not use DAP Premium for downloading on Internet dialup. I tried their Extreme Acceleration, dialup connection settings (56 Kbps) and allowed it to search for the best sources but rarely saw an increase of 1-2 KBps for some of the downloads (tried sites – download.com and tucows.com).
Also, If your PC is not optimized and has slow processor, less RAM, unfragmented hard disk etc. leading to a slow PC, then obviously, you will experience slow browsing on Internet dialup. To make your PC process faster, check out the following posts on my blog:

I am sure that my time and efforts in writing these two part posts would surely help some of my friends in getting more browsing and download speeds on their Internet dialup connections.
If you can find a broadband service provider in your area, go for a pack matching your browsing and download needs as you cannot see movies and do large downloads in GB’s whatever tweaking, settings and web acceleration you may do on a dialup connection.
Did any of these tips helped you? Let me know!
All the best!
