My Expert Tips On Earning More From Mturk As A Worker

WARNING: SORRY TO WRITE IN CAPS. I AM NOT SHOUTING BUT WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT IN APRIL 2010 ALONE, THREE MTURK WORKERS HAVE PERSONALLY COMMENTED ABOUT THEIR AND FAMILY MEMBERS MTURK ACCOUNT SUSPENSION WITHOUT ANY REASONS. THESE WORKERS WERE HONEST AND EXPERIENCED HAVING BALANCES RANGING FROM 0 TO MORE THAN A 1000 DOLLAR. MTURK HAS NOT BOTHERED TO RESPOND TO THEIR EMAILS AND HAVE KEPT THEIR MONEY IN ITS ASS. SO IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO WORK AT MTURK, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I DIDN’T DELETE THE POST AFTER COMING TO KNOW ABOUT THREE CASES OF MTURK CHEATING (THOUGH THERE WILL BE TOO MANY) AS KEEPING IT WILL SERVE MORE PURPOSE, RIGHT? Hi!

Some of the readers have emailed me enquiring how can they earn more from Mturk. Well, I thought, since I have already stopped working at Mturk from last few months due to reasons listed at:

So, why not share the tips that will probably help people in making more money. I am sure that some of these tips will definitely help  you – specially new workers as well the experienced ones too. So, here are my ideas that may help you in earning more from Mturk (not sure if you can do it as the Mturk HITs have reached disgusting low levels – checked from Net):

- To get eligible for more HITS, clear the qualification tests (Check Qualifications tab by clicking on it).

- If you are new to Mturk, then start with the HITs that are easy and available most. The idea here is to raise your HIT approval rate (%).

Once you have high approval rate, you can go for slightly difficult ones and earn more. Always maintain a high approval rate as quality Requesters mostly keep HITS approval rate (%) high to only let the best workers work on their HITS.

- Make sure that “Show all details” is clicked when working on HITS (in all open HITs browser windows), this will aid you in seeing the vital requirements and qualifications for that HIT.

- Always use a multi-tab browser such as Firefox so that you can open the different types of Mturk HITS in various browser windows. Clue – one tab each for Reward Amount (most first), HIT Creation Date (newest first), HITs Available (most first), Expiration Date (soonest first/latest first and Time Allotted (most first/least first). These browser tabs for HITs are arranged as per my preferences, you can choose a different order of the browser tabs as per your preferences.

You should definitely keep on refreshing your browser windows in these tabs to keep a check on the HITS and then clicking at the fastest speed to get the interesting ones matching your choice. Oh! needless to say, you must first see if you can do the HIT and the first choice must be to get the HIT of highest reward.

- Writing and transcription HITS as observed by me used to pay more, so try doing these HITs. Or, check the HITS that pay more over a period of time. If you are not able to do these high paying frequent HITs because you don’t have the skills then get those skills. But make sure to analyze over a period of few months that these types of HITs frequently comes at Mturk as you might waste your money in acquiring these skills unnecessarily. I think that the chances that your skills will go waste are remote as you will definitely get work from some other sites also. Skills never go waste if you keep on looking for ways to utilize them somewhere.

- Use a good fast broadband connection so that you get the HIT when you click on it. If you are clicking on a HIT and getting a message that the HIT has been assigned to someone/Not available then you must check if you are clicking on the HIT quickly or should go for a faster broadband connection. 2 Mbps broadband connection should be Okay but if all workers have the same broadband speed connection and they all are clicking at a particular HIT at the same time, the one with the faster broadband speed and PC wins. So, decide on this point accordingly as per your experiences at Mturk.

- If a Requester rejects your HIT, contact him/her and ask the reason. I did get some of my HITS approved this way. Contacting Mturk is useless in such cases as they are only interested in their commissions from Requester and not in getting your money from Requester. They give a shit about Worker’s money (it hurts but it’s true).

Also, on the other hand, appreciate a Requester who approves all your HITs and pays quickly. Write and maintain a contact with these Good Requesters. The probability is there that the Requester may choose you and other similar quality workers exclusively for future similar HITS at the same rates. Also, they may give you the work directly without Mturk if they find that the work requires skilled workers who are already in touch with them through email. What is the point for a genuine Requester to get the HITS done through MTURK if the same workers are directly available to do the same work at the same rates minus the Requester commission paid to Mturk? Requester in such cases will thus save their commissions other wise given to Mturk for posting the same HITS there.

Also, sometimes, the instructions given by the Requester in the HIT are not 100% complete (despite their best attempts). When you contact such Requester after your HIT work is rejected and correspond with them, they take care to relax their approvals accordingly and also take care to include full details for the future similar HITs posted at Mturk.

- Join Mturk workers forum – http://turkers.proboards80.com and be active over there. It’s a nice forum where your peers, working for Mturk HITs, post their opinions, problems and solutions etc related to Mturk HITs. No body can give you the real, quality  money making Mturking tips close to turkers.proboards80.com – Mturk workers community!  The reason is the volume of knowledge that comes  through hundreds of the Mturkers sharing their experiences as a Mturk worker.

Another forum of Mturkers worth joining (some what at small scale presently as compared to http://turkers.proboards80.com) is http://www.mturkforum.com/.

The registration for both of these Mturk workers forums is free and you can definitely increase your earnings by being a committed member over there. Examples of what you can gain from these two forums – List of Requesters that don’t pay at all or do illogical rejections, Requesters that are open to feedback of Workers and pay honestly, Spammers, tips for getting HITs approved etc. I hope you got the clues for how being active at these two forums can increase your Mturk Worker earnings. I always write Worker earnings specifically as there are Requesters at Mturk who are also earning by not paying to the Workers despite their 100% correctly submitted work.

zulqarnain: Hello! I searched but couldn’t find the answer to your first query of receiving payments from Mturk in Pakistan’s currency (since you are residing there). Mturk site clearly mentions Indian and USA workers payments in their respective currencies but not of other countries.

However, there are workers from 100 countries working at Mturk as per the given below URL:

According to me, rather than doing Mturk assignments for $2-3 per hour, it’s better to work do some real world offline job. I am presently giving part time tuitions and earning more than what I was at Mturk.

zulqarnain: The good thing that I see behind Mturk not being available in your country (Pakistan) is that you won’t be working at disgusting low rates. This is certainly a positive thing as you won’t be wasting your time and energy on earning cents or max $2-3 per hour (from recent feedback of Mturk workers).

I read something about using scripts in mturk, but couldn’t understand what it is or how/why you use it. Can you share some information on that please?

@ Roshan: Good question. Mturk scripts are instructions installed in the Worker/Requester browser to aid them in working/posting and designing HITS respectively. Personally, I have never used scripts at Mturk till I last worked in November, 2008.

I researched and found that there are good and bad uses of scripts. Good, when you are using it for helping yourself in saving your time, for example – A Red indicator showing that you have an assigned HIT to be completed. Bad when you are using it to auto complete the HITS without checking the HITS at all. Example: A HIT that requires you to fill in three tags depending on the given content. The user using the relevant tags filling script doesn’t even read the paragraph and let the script fill the data automatically leading to irrelevant tags sometimes.

Mturk has banned some of the users using scripts or/and bots (instructions/programs used for completing a task by automating it to a large extent as possible) for programming the completion and submitting of the HITs.

More examples of scripts that could help Mturk Worker (I have only chosen only those that I think will not cheat the Mturk system but would save worker’s time) are:

- Turkopticon scripts let you see the review of the Requesters (if available from Workers) posting the HITs. This can definitely help you in working only for the Requesters who have good reviews. The review of the Requester is shown by a Button (only for the Requesters with some review data), which is filled with a color – the color depends on the type of Requester, example – Red for the Requester who doesn’t have good reviews etc.
- Displaying current earnings to your Worker account
- By Installing Accept/Skip script, the user can simply press A or S for Accepting or Skipping a HIT respectively.

I checked Mturk terms of use at – https://www.mturk.com/mturk/conditionsofuse

and found this clause – 3 b (only the suitable text is given):

As a Provider you are performing Services for a Requester in your personal capacity as an independent contractor and not as an employee of the Requester. You specifically acknowledge and agree to the following: (i) you will not use robots, scripts or other automated methods to complete the Services;

So the Provider must ensure that the script being used by him/her while doing Mturk HITS is not in any way going to cheat the Mturk system and complies to their policies. If you are in doubt, please consult Mturk.

BTW – I don’t see any harm in using the three scripts given by me in the examples and many others that helps the Worker in saving some of his/her time and also doesn’t affect the quality of the work in any way.

@ Sivam: The best would be to contact Mturk Customer Support (MCS) and ask for the reason for your account suspension.

Here are some of the URL’s which you can checkout before contacting MCS. The first and the only para is from their site with the details of their terms (conditions of use)

Frankly, there is not much you can do except contacting Mturk and then doing follow up with them. They are the boss and can do anything as written in their policies which were accepted by you before signing up as a Worker.

Maintain your cool and try to sort out things logically.

If nothing works out, try signing up with a new id of someone else – friend or relative, whose id proof can be submitted. After the id proof has been submitted and you have sorted out the payment terms with you friend/relative, you can start mturking again.

But first, try your best to find out why they suspended your account so that the same thing doesn’t happen again.

I try Mturk for about 2 days made around $18 that used ad Amazon gift credit towards a purchase. I find it to be mostly a waste of time. Their are very little good paying hit and a lot of spamers that want you to spam or sing up for any of their offers. Also you see a Hit that said .50 for reviewing an ad. You open the hit and their are 20 ads so basically they were paying one HIT that should had been 20 and the pay rate were 2.5 cents.

Brother! Thanks!! for your review about mturk. I had been working with mturk for the past 4 months and also received my first cheque. As u said many spammers were posting jobs there, they never used to pay money. I think the forum u provided will be very much helpful. In previous reply u mentioned about lucrative options online and offline, but i think it is hard to differentiate those things from scams. In our country(India) also many scam sites were there stating that they offer online jobs. Even i also got trapped once by paying Rs.1000& lost it finally. @ Prabu: Thanks for your detailed comments and sharing of online experiences. Scams are easy to trace out – Any one who is offering something that is too good to be true is definitely a scam, examples – i). Start earning hundreds of dollar in 15 minutes – No work required, any one can do this, ii). Automated income – you setup once and forget it – we do all the work for you, iii). Earn thousands by typing and data entry and sites requiring membership fees before offering work etc. The best would be to search a review for that product or company. Even the screenshots of earnings and testimonials are fake at such sites. Earning money online is not easy and require patience, hard work and logical thinking to work on a real opportunity. I would definitely share some more genuine money earning opportunities as soon as I pass it from my end. Wishing you success!

hi rajesh my account has been suspended for after i got warnings from two requesters. can i have the another account in the same payee name and same proof proof what i have submitted in my first account. Because i don’t have any alternative…do they store my suspended account information in their database…I can work from the different ip than the previous one….

@Balakrishna: Contact Mturk customer support and take their help in this case. Or, try opening another account with different user id but with your name and address (slight changes, such as H.No. instead of House number) and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, find someone in your family, take his/her consent as you will be getting your money in their name and if you get green signal then register with their name and details etc. Also, do HITS very carefully to avoid further suspension if the previous one was due to your mistake.

Good article, and I’m saying that from the “other side”: I’ve been a Requester on MTurk for a few projects and on Rent-A-Coder for about a hundred.

My one comment is that writing/transcription tasks are never going to go away. Prices will fluctuate, to be sure, but the skills will always be useful.

@Balaji: Mturk definitely pays money after it credits to your Mturk account, the concern is some of the Requesters who get work done for free by rating even the correct work as wrong and the low paying rates of HITS. Oh! according to me, there are more international scam sites in MMO (Make Money Online) domain compared to Indian sites. You have to be really smart and intelligent to not get duped online. Research and follow your inner instinct before you pay someone online!

I had worker account with mturk. I use to get frequent account warning message from a client called Philips Leslly for whom I never worked. I reported this to mturk several time. their reply is not satisfactory. they said a requester may have many accounts and they can block worker for all accounts.

Suddenly on 18th March, they suspended my account and sent me mail that my earnings will be sent to me . But so far I have not received any mail from them about the conversion. they are not responding to me.

can I get any contact email id to solve this issue with mturk.

@VS Sumathy: Sorry to know that your Mturk Worker account has been blocked without any fault at your end. I don’t have the direct email address of Mturk Customer Support. I used to email them from the contact form at https://www.mturk.com/mturk/contactus which you already have used. The best would be to wait for 1-2 weeks for Mturk Customer Support to respond. If they don’t respond, then you may contact Jesse Fauth at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=18247934056 and ask if he can help you. You can also lodge online complaints of Mturk cheating (hope that you have money in your suspended account) at: http://ripoffreport.com, https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en and http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx.

@Gubendran: Ideally, Mturk Worker account verification status should be intimated within one week after submission of documents. How does one come to know that the Mturk account is verified? One should receive an email from Mturk And One should be able to withdraw the earnings if the account is verified otherwise Not!

I checked my old records and found that when the worker submits the verification document, there is a link to “contact customer service” at https://www.mturk.com/mturk/contactus?subject=Customer+Support and “check the enrollment status” at: https://www.mturk.com/mturk/youraccount.

If your account status is not changed then contact Mturk Customer Support. They might not have been able to open or see the attached verification document correctly plus not bothered to respond to you.

You can also try withdrawing money for test purpose to check if you are able to withdraw without any account non verification errors.

I had an account in M Turk and they sent the payment in correct time. But On March 31 2010 at 11 pm I got a message that my account was suspended. They says I have violated the participation agreement, But I haven’t done anything wrong. This is my one and only one income for me and child. @Nisha: Sorry to know that your Mturk account was suspended without any reason. One more blog reader – Selva has also brought this to my notice. I don’t understand why a reputed Co. like Amazon would do this? Selva has also sent me the proof of his Amazon payment account with his decent earnings ($835.43) displayed. It looks that Amazon have got too much of money and are not even afraid of closing down, feel extremely angry that they are suspending accounts (seems to be with bigger balances) without any reasons.

Were you having big amount in your your Mturk worker account? Also, contact Mturk and ask them which clause of their worker policy have you not followed. Legally, they cannot keep the worker’s earnings even if they have suspended his/her account.

My advice to everyone would be never to keep more than $ 200 – 300 pending payment online with the remote party (if possible).

BTW – You can check these free freelancing/classified/work from home sites/blogs which I have bookmarked over a period of time (please note that I don’t take any guarantees of their honesty etc. Research these sites yourself and don’t ever pay any money as membership fees etc. These sites are based on my own findings which can be wrong too, also I have not tested these sites. Based on reviews and my experience etc., they look free and Ok to me. Investigate and try them at your own risk!):

http://pcworkathome.in (Indian site listing work from home jobs. Kindly look at the dates as some of the listings are very old but it has current jobs also which are mostly taken from craigslist.org)

http://www.contentwriter.in/jobs-bank.htm (Site listing part time jobs in India)

http://craigslist.org/in (check jobs section for Indian cities and use http://www.crazedlist.org to search for international work from home direct jobs quickly. Jobs are low paying and most of them are junk but sometimes you get good assignments directly from a company/individual. Always collect payment at least once in a week as there are scammers that get work for one month, don’t pay and reply and then post another similar ad, get the work done for another one month similarly for free and keep this cycle ON resulting in free work for them).

http://www.mylot.com/about/earnings.aspx (Check FAQ and signup link on the given page, thought of giving you some background so didn’t post the signup link directly, no fixed payment per post, pays on the popularity of the post and worker activeness at the site)

http://jobs.problogger.net/ (Blogging jobs, most are for US writers but internationals assignments are also posted)

http://www.sitepoint.com/about/writeforus (Reputed site requiring writing on specialized topics mostly, open for international writers too)

Don’t pay any membership fees, if there, at any of the sites. I have collected these sites over a period of time based on my research and understanding mainly. Once again, please research before working on assignments through these sites.

During last week of March, mturk has suspended my account. This account has been started by me before an year and a requester “nonprofit” specially allows me to do his hits. Only one requester ‘tagcow’ has blocked me before 9 months and there are no other faults in my account. I do not have any account balance in that account. But I have other accounts in my family member’s names (husband & father). All those accounts are also suspended and I have lost more than 300 USD. We are joint family and my other family members lost more than 2500 USD. I think nowadays mturk is cheating the turkers.

When we contact the customer support no proper respond has been given. Only they give same responds to all our mails. I think they not even read our mail. Only the system is answering our mails. May be the employees of mturk are taking our money by closing our accounts. The amount of the suspended accounts are not returned to us. Believing mturk we have invested a lot.

Can we believe mturk? Can we approach the higher authorities of mturk? who are they?

@Julie: Sorry to know that your’s and family members Mturk worker accounts were suspended without any reasons. I stopped working at Mturk approx. one and a half year back and in fact two of my Mturk posts offers balanced review, rather negative review of them. Two more workers – Ms. Nisha and Mr. Selva also recently reported of their Mturk worker account suspension without any reason. I don’t know the way to contact Mturk customer support except through their contact form. You may complain Mturk worker account suspensions to ripoffreport, FTC, IC3 (their addresses are in this post), Mturk workers forums and top work from home blogs.

I am going to edit my Mturk posts and warn the visitors about Mturk cheating by sudden suspension of Worker’s account without any reasons. I don’t really understand what they are up to as this system won’t last for long if they continue suspending worker’s account like this. If every worker stopped working, who will do the assignments of Requesters? May be, Mturk alone know the answer to this question Or may be they are planning to close this site soon!

Earlier I though of deleting both of my Mturk posts but then thought that displaying warning at top will be the right choice as the landing users will come to know what Mturk is presently up to. If I delete the posts, two channels of informing the visitors about present Mturk cheating will be lost. Believe me, maintaining these two Mturk posts are turning to be real headache to me! It’s a free non paid thankless job. But, I still hope that it is helping some of the readers as the comments have some useful work from home sites too.

Dear Rajesh,
On 3rd April my Mturk account also suspended without any reason. I have loss 293 USD. I don’t have the direct email address of Mturk Customer Support. I used to email them from the contact form at https://www.mturk.com/mturk/contactus but i can’t receive proper reply from mturk customer service they said i have violated the participation agreement, But I have not done anything wrong. Is there any other way to withdrawn my funds.

My account has been suspended without any intimation. That suspended account has $163.
And also my wife’s account has been suspended in the same day. That account has $40.

How to get that amount from suspended accounts?

@Dessy, Raman, Balaji: Sorry to know that your Mturk Worker accounts were suspended and Mturk is not responding. Since, I have not been working on Mturk for more than an year and never faced such an issue, I don’t know how to get money or Worker account back from them. If you want to report to ripoffreport, FTC and IC3 etc., you can do that (their URL’s are here in the comments). I researched the Net but didn’t find any solution to the issues of Mturk suspended account and getting the suspended account earnings back. I repeat – Mturk has no right to keep Worker’s earnings that were credited after verification of work. Also, they must tell the Worker the exact reason of suspension of the account. They cannot keep the earnings which were already credited as it was given by the Requester and not them.

Please go through this article and see if this can help you in filing online complaints against Mturk cheating. If you have done everything right as Mturk worker then you have full right to get your hard earned money. Check this article at (some of the links don’t work but still the rest are good):

Hi,

I am from India….. I withdraw money in Indian rupees on feb 13th . But till date I did not receive cheque from mturk.
I mailed to customer service and they told they will reissue another cheque which may take two months to deliver….Any one help me regarding this…..

I have viewed your comments about Mturk cheating. It is very sad that lot of
persons lost more money.

I think that every one can represent or send some mails to Obama i.e. to Whitehouse. I have already sent. If more mails about Mturk goes they may initiate some action. If they pay to all suspended accounts at least, I will be happy.

Just research this and inform all.
